Dr. Dre, Ice Cube to Appear in 'Straight Outta Compton' Livestream

Original N.W.A members Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella and MC Ren will participate in a YouTube livestream on Tuesday tied to the upcoming biopic Straight Outta Compton. The hip-hop icons will join director F. Gary Gray, cast members O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell, moderator MC Lyte and “members of the Compton community” to discuss the “rise and fall of N.W.A, as well as topical and social issues” addressed in the film, according to a press release. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11th, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. PST.

A countdown to the livestream can be viewed below.

Ice Cube told Rolling Stone that the film – which hits theaters August 14th – offers an accurate depiction of N.W.A’s studio process. “You’ll tease a motherfucker if he ain’t getting it right,” he said. “You can get real personal. All that comes out in the movie, and it’s great that we were able to produce a movie at that level.”

Ice Cube, Eazy-E’s widow Tomica Woods-Wright and Dr. Dre produced Straight Outta Compton, with Dre saying he was skeptical about the project at first. “I don’t want anything to pour water on my legacy,” Dre said on his The Pharmacy Beats 1 radio show, calling the first few scripts “corny.” But he was convinced to participate after seeing Ice Cube’s vision.

“Ice Cube, he actually grabbed the bull by the horns. He went in and got the script done and I read this new script that he brung in and it was like, ‘Oh, OK, I like that,'” Dre said. “Then, when [director] Gary Gray decided he wanted to come on board and direct, I’m like, ‘OK, we might have something here.'”

Last month, Dre announced that his first LP in 16 years would be the Straight Outta Compton soundtrack – not the long-awaited, near-mythical Detox. The rapper-producer announced last week that he’s donating his artist royalties from the album to fund an arts center in Compton.
